Famous Paintings Recreated | Michigan Artist Collaboration

Grand Rapids, Michigan is home to a huge array of fantastic artists, theatre gurus, and stylists- I am so fortunate to know several amazing people who came together to bring Erick Rodriguez's vision to fruition.

During a boudoir session in the studio as we waited for a client to arrive, Erick asks shyly, "I have this vision... I want to do famous paintings, you know, like in photographs?" I screech loudly, "HECK YES!" And voila, the project had a launching pad.  Erick slaved with the help of Jeremy Schnotala to put together accurate clothing for each portrait we wanted to do.  The fantastically talented Elliot Yared of Rubies Salon in Grand Rapids came in to execute the intricate hair stylings of each set (which was no small task).  And I, Laura Munro, was left with the task of photographing each portrait true to the original and to create the composites for the backgrounds (as well as pulling my hair out trying to paint each background- yikes).   Together, we created some pretty sweet images, even taking a little artistic license with my personal favorite, Warhol Quad-Face Marilyn.

I hope you enjoy this series as much as we did in creating it for our portfolios.  Below the original image is a link to information about the original painting.

Frida Kahlo's self portraits are beautiful,
haunting, and full of symbolism.
